How to beat Blue Monday

January 20, 2020

Today is Blue Monday, also known as “the most depressing day of the year".

While there is little to no scientific evidence behind blue Monday - the third Monday of January, there are still a couple of reasons we may be feeling sadder than usual this time of year.

Many of us are experiencing dark, cold days; holiday shopping debts; extra holiday season pounds and failed New Year’s resolutions. Blue Monday may not be real, but the winter blues are!

It’s never more important to look after both your physical, emotional and mental health than during the winter months.

Here are some handy tips:

1. Eat healthy meals. Foods rich in folic acid such as avocado and spinach as well as those high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and tuna

2. Get off the couch! Exercise releases endorphins or “feel-good” chemicals, which make you happier.  If possible, exercise outdoors in natural light for an extra boost of endorphins.

3. Load up on Vitamin D. Eat foods such as fortified milk and egg yolks to increase levels of the sunshine vitamin. Consult your family doctor or naturopathic doctor if you think you may be struggling with low vitamin levels.

4. Don’t keep it to yourself. Make time to speak to someone about how you are feeling. While it’s completely normal to feel down every now and again (especially in winter), this could become more chronic and be a sign of depression.

And lastly, remember:
